In a time-honored tradition to signal the start of the Texan Basketball season, the Tarleton State men's and women's programs recently hosted Midnight Madness, an exhilarating event that extended well into the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Amidst an evening filled with awe-inspiring dunks, giveaways, and some impressive dance moves, the Texans ushered in the 2023-24 basketball season in style. As the clock struck midnight, the Texan basketball squads for the 2023-24 season made their grand entrance, illuminated by a pair of dazzling spark shooters in the dimly lit gym.
The first contest after midnight pitted members of the women's team, Teresa Da Silva and Andjela Bigovic, against men's players Jakorie Smith and Devon Barnes in a three-point shooting competition. Smith, who made an impressive 15 three-pointers in 30 seconds, ultimately lost to Barnes in the final round, with a score of 42-39.
The highly anticipated dunk contest followed, where Izzy Miles and Zaakir Sawyer captivated the crowd with their gravity-defying dunks. After receiving perfect scores of 10 from the judges, Miles emerged as the winner in his first Midnight Madness appearance as a Texan.
The night concluded with an eight-minute intra-squad scrimmage between the men's teams, as the white team took on the purple team. Marked by a series of spectacular dunks by Miles and a thunderous block by Lue Williams, the purple team secured a 24-22 victory, earning Whataburger coupons for fans on their side of the stadium.
