NBA Requirements for In-Season Play
The idea of an in-season tournament was proposed by David Stern, who served as the league's president from 1984 to 2014. It wasn't until Adam Silva took over in 2014 that the idea gained traction. The league came up with the idea of an in-season tournament. Championships that qualify for Wimbledon or the FA Cup.
"We felt that the ultimate goal of the Larry O'Brien Trophy and winning championships wouldn't be taken away from us in any way," Silva said." You can create another meaningful tournament during the season."
"As the saying goes, a new tradition doesn't form overnight. It takes a long time to build."
Fan reaction and possible improvements
When the in-season tournament was announced, fans were divided. But most are still curious about the end result of the new feature.NBA star Tyrese Halliburton added another aspect that the league could implement in the new tournament.
"I think the biggest incentive for everybody is an automatic playoff spot. If it was a playoff spot, I think everybody would take it very, very seriously, right? I think the veteran teams would take it seriously too," Halliburton said.
It's not a bad idea, but it could push the season to become more competitive," Halliburton said.
